Introducing the PREVENT ASCVD Risk Calculator on ClinCalc.com

PREVENT 10-Year ASCVD Risk Calculator

ClinCalc.com is excited to announce the launch of the PREVENT ASCVD Risk Calculator, a validated online tool that estimates a patient’s 10-year risk of a first atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) event or heart failure hospitalization using the 2023 PREVENT equations.

ASCVD risk estimation plays a central role in preventive cardiology and is used to guide decisions around statin therapy, antihypertensives, and other interventions. For the past decade, the 2013 Pooled Cohort Equations (PCE) have been the standard tool for cardiovascular risk assessment. However, with the release of the 2025 hypertension guidelines, the PREVENT equations are now the recommended method for risk estimation. PREVENT offers improved predictive accuracy, eliminates the use of race-specific equations, and incorporates additional clinical and social risk factors.

Why use the ClinCalc PREVENT calculator?

While the American Heart Association (AHA) provides an official implementation of PREVENT, ClinCalc’s version offers enhanced functionality that makes it more practical for day-to-day clinical use:

  • Built-in BMI and eGFR calculators for situations where only height/weight or serum creatinine are available.
  • Direct entry of Social Deprivation Index (SDI) when ZIP code is not available.
  • Comprehensive outputs including:
    • Visualizations of ASCVD risk categories
    • Breakdown of each risk factor contributions to overall ASCVD risk
    • Comparison to “optimal risk factor” scenarios
    • Event-specific risks for coronary heart disease, stroke, heart failure hospitalization, and total CVD

These features are not available on the AHA’s website and give clinicians deeper insight into patient-specific risk and counseling opportunities.

Validated and Reliable

Accuracy is critical in clinical decision-making. The ClinCalc PREVENT calculator has been rigorously validated to ensure it produces identical risk estimates to the AHA official implementation. Clinicians can be confident that results are both accurate and reproducible, while benefiting from the enhanced usability and visualizations unique to ClinCalc.

Moving Forward with PREVENT

The transition from PCE 2013 to PREVENT 2023 reflects a major step forward in ASCVD risk assessment. PREVENT better accounts for kidney function, diabetes, SDI, and other key predictors, while improving calibration across diverse patient populations. With its integration into the 2025 hypertension guidelines, PREVENT is now the evidence-based standard for clinical practice.
